The Biggest Downsides To Roller Garage Doors

When in the market for a garage door, many people will consider roller garage doors.  These are the type that you are used to seeing in automotive shops and grocery store delivery areas.  Rather than having large slats, they are comprised of many smaller ones that roll up into a small box on the top of the garage opening.  Roller doors are a fantastic choice, but they do have a few negative aspects that make them not work very well in some homes.  In this post I want to cover some of these so that there are no surprises later on, should you choose to install one!

The biggest downside is the lack of styles that they come in.  Many people are very picky about the front side of their home, and want it to look absolutely perfect.  Roller shutter garage doors don’t come in very many different finishes, but they can be painted, which is a lot of extra work.  Over the last few years, the styling of these garage doors has significantly improved, but it will be a while before they can match standard garage door styles.

Another problem that people run into is that the box simply doesn’t fit on the inside of their garage.  Roller doors go directly upward into a box, rather than sliding along a track into the back of the garage.  The space above the top of the garage has to be able to fit this box, or else it has to be installed on the outside which does not look good at all!

A small problem that some have with these is the lack of windows.  The small slats just aren’t big enough for windows, so you have to do without.  This is a big security improvement, but it’s not the most stylish look.

Roller garage doors are great in almost every home installation, assuming they fit and you can live with their plain styling.  The added security and safety they provide is generally enough to sway most, but not everyone!
