If you own a handgun you should plan to own a safe. There are countless tragic examples of children finding an unsecured (and loaded) handgun and killing or injuring themselves or another child. Wall safes are nice products to own as they can be concealed easily, are very secure (as they are difficult to get to in the wall, and are out of the way. Installing a wall safe for
your pistol is an easy process.
- Read your installation manual. Improper installation may void the warranty, damage your home, or compromise the security of your safe. Also understand if your safe model is fireproof. If it is not, you should plan to put any important papers into a safety deposit box or a separate fireproof safe.
- Find a place to mount the pistol safe. It should be on an inside wall so that it does not interfere with any insulation. Also, try to avoid any walls that back up to either the kitchen or bathroom as they may contain plumbing lines that we neither want to accidentally cut nor can we work around.
- Use a stud sensor to find the wall studs in the mounting area. Review the mounting requirements in the installation manual. Most wall safes mount into a 16″ on center wall cavity. Using the stud sensor will insure you have the proper space before we cut!
- Mark the wall and cut out the area with a drywall saw. Work slowly and carefully to not cut any electrical wires or plumbing lines.
- Often the safe manufacturer will have you shim out the opening to add more wood to secure the safe to in the opening. Consult your installation manual.
- Push the safe into this new opening. Use a level to insure it is in the opening square. Most manufactures will supply screws. Plan to use theirs for maximum security.
This project should take less than 1 hour with all the proper tools. Now you have a new and hidden pistol safe in your home.
