How to Measure Roman Blinds

Measuring for Roman blinds is quite a simple process.  You just have to take note of the most important thing, which is to measure each window where you intend to place the blinds.  Do measure them one by one, as windows vary in size and wrong measurements could result in poorly fitting ready made Roman blinds.

The best measuring tool to use is a steel measuring tape since it is more accurate.  It is also less frustrating to use, particularly on larger windows and if you are measuring without the help of someone else. Most people choose to measure the width first before the length/height. There really is no substantial difference wherever you want to start to measure.  Others also like to measure from left to right, instead of the other way around.  Similarly, there’s no big difference. But it is a wise move that the recording of the measurements be done to the nearest 1/8 of an inch.  Precisely measuring Roman blinds will effectively reduce the chances of being unhappy with the finished product.

There are actually two processes involved in measuring for Roman blinds.   One is for inside-mounted blinds and the other is for outside-mounted blinds. It is of extreme importance to be accurate when measuring for an inside mounting since a slight inaccuracy can cause the blinds not to fit properly inside the window casing and inevitably look awkward. Normally, there’s a minimum requirement for the depth of the window which should fall within the range of 2 to 3 ½ inches.  Measuring the width inside the window casing must be done at the top, middle and bottom to show variance in the window casing.  You should also take note of the narrowest measurement within.  Do the same thing when measuring the height, recording the longest measurement instead. Clearance deductions are unnecessary since the factory will prepare the blinds so they fit comfortably to your windows.

Measuring for outside-mounted Roman blinds, on the other hand, is less intricate since extreme precision is not a necessity.
In order for you to have supreme light control and privacy, it is important that an overlap of the window casing be measured. The overlap should fall within the range of 1 to 1 ½ inches on both sides of the window opening. This measurement must be the width you wish to be exactly covered. The same must be done to measure the height, with the overlap considered. Normally, the overlap covers from the top edge of the molding to the top edge or the bottom edge of the window sill. Should you wish to put it up above the molding, be sure to include an additional 1 to 1 ½ inches to provide space for the mounting bracket.  Take note that the factory will make no deductions for outside-mounted blinds.  The appearance of your made to measure Roman blinds will ultimately be based entirely on the measurements you took.
