Upgrading to wood flooring can be expensive, so you should do some research before you decide to move forward with the project. Adding wood floors will most likely increase the overall value and appeal of your home, and it will almost certainly increase your pride of ownership. But there are lots of hidden costs involved, so
make sure you understand what’s involved.
Many wood flooring companies advertise hardwood floors for as little as $2.99 a square foot. If you have a 1,000-square-foot area, it would be reasonable to think that you could upgrade to wood for around $3,000. But that number would be way off because it usually doesn’t include installation.
Even if you intend to install the flooring yourself, there are supplies and tools you’ll need that will add to the expense.
Bear in mind that unlike carpeting, which gets dirty and wears quickly, real wood floors will last a very long time if they’re taken care of. So take that into consideration when you make your final decision.
The type of sub floor in your home will determine what kind of wood flooring you can install and how much it will cost. If your sub floor is concrete, using solid wood is pretty much out of the question because it will be double the price of an engineered wood floor that can be glued down.
The cost of glue varies, but you can figure somewhere between 50 cents and a dollar per square foot. If you’re installing over concrete, you’ll also need some kind of moisture protection which can add as much as $2.00 more per square foot.
If you have a wood sub floor, you can use either solid or engineered wood, but then you’ll have the expense of nails and renting a nailer if you do it yourself. If the flooring company installs your floors, they’ll charge between $2 and $4 a square foot, depending on where you live.
There’s always some waste, so you’ll have to buy more wood than you actually need. And you’ll also have to purchase molding, baseboards, and transitional pieces.
Before you know it, the cost of that $2.99 a square foot flooring is more like $8.00 a square foot. Which makes doing a 1,000-square-foot a lot more expensive than you thought.
