You have either one of two types: It’s either a raised wooden floor base or a cement slab. Tiled or carpeted if it’s in your home or bare concrete if your converting your garage. If you’re converting your garage, the bare cement look has got to go for sure. But this doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to spend a ton of money. For instance, you can have it pressure cleaned then go with some good concrete floor paint. There are also some good rubberized concrete coatings on the market that you might want to look into. They’re actually made for coating cement roofs but would be perfect for this type of scenario. Or another budget stretching idea is get on the phone and call around to some local carpet outlets. See what they have in the way of used carpet. They have to tear out the used carpet on installation jobs, before they can put in the new. Don’t kid yourself because it’s not at all uncommon for people who can afford it to have perfectly good carpet replaced because they don’t like the color or nap. Anyway, if you are determined you can find an installer that has some to sell you on the cheap. Now you can find any number of rubber padding products specifically designed for gyms and gym equipment online but it can be a bit pricey. Particularly if it’s quality padding. But here’s something that you may not know about. It’s the sectional rubber floor pads that you can find at your local ranch or equestrian supply center. That is if your town has one. Anyway, it’s made for the floors of stalls and livestock transport trailers and it’s pretty amazing stuff. It comes in sections that fit together like puzzle pieces. It’s thicker and more durable…just perfect for hard gym floor padding. Now if you’re dealing with a spare room with a raised wood floor, you obviously don’t have to deal with the concrete like you would in a garage. Instead, what you have to deal with here is structural issues. Now chances are that your floor will be able to support the weight of say a gym machine just fine. However, if you plan on using standard barbells, it’s another story. It’s the standing lifts that are the issue. All it takes here is for one “psyched up he-man” to overdo it, lose a set of weights in mid-lift, and you could end up a set of weights stuck in your floor. Or the original underpinning underneath the floor may just not even be strong enough to begin with. So start out by climbing under your home and taking inventory of what the floor in the room was joist’ with. What you want to hope for is something like 2 x 8s or 2 x10s or 2 x 12s. Or if you’re really lucky, you’ll find newer engineered TGIs or truss joists. What you don’t want to see is 2 x 6s set on a 2 foot layout. That’s about as weak a flooring underpinning system as you can get and your home will have to be pretty old to have something like that. Shoring up sub-grade flooring is no big deal. Simply use a shovel and concrete to add in some add hoc footings then post up and nail on some 4 x 4s where needed. Under the area you’re going to set up your weights for sure. Chinese rugs often have many dye colors and different lengths of pile, which gives them that sculpted look, but although it seems like a disaster if you’ve spilt something on the carpet, it’s really less of a challenge than you might think. Why? Because wool carpet and area rugs, especially quality Persian and Chinese carpets, are able to be cleaned with water. Here’s how: Make some foam, as dry as possible, using a liquid detergent or a wool rug cleaning solution like Woolite. Place the foam on the stained area, then using an absorbent pad, work the solution into the pile – gently without scrubbing too hard. For red wine or things like spaghetti sauce you may need a little vinegar or even a bit of diluted peroxide, but first try using a regular wool cleaner and water. Once the stain is lifted, let it dry, then vacuum. For wool rug cleaning you should know that there are household products that will destroy your carpet so be careful to avoid bleach or alkaline cleaners. Wool should be cleaned with a neutral cleaner, then dried as quickly as thoroughly as possible. Oxy cleaners are great for synthetic fibers but do not bring them near your beautiful Chinese rugs made from wool. Don’t rent a steam cleaner for wool carpeting because heat may shrink and destroy the fiber to say nothing of causing dyes to run. Wool does not need dry-cleaning either. It can be washed by hand in warm or cool water with mild wool cleaning solutions. You can do this yourself if you have an area to lay the carpet flat and where it can dry in the sun. If not, you’ll have to call the professionals. They’ll wash your rug with water using powerful wands and brushes that are gentle on the fibers. These left over’s then sold as bound carpet remnants directly to consumers or to local warehouses or carpet retailers. The discount carpet remnant is also created as left over from installation jobs. Many times large office buildings use high quality olefin carpet made to withstand high traffic. These can be great remnants to find as they work great for basements or recreation areas around the home. These remnants are then off loaded to carpet warehouses or retailers who sell them at discount prices. The key to finding good quality remnants in usable sizes is patience. You may also have to compromise on the color or pattern but eventually you should find something you can use. Finding a good carpet installer will also help you with the installation to reduce visible seams when joining the remnants. The term Oriental rug refers to rugs from the continent of Asia. This includes the countries of Turkey, Iran (Persia), Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, China, Nepal, Mongolia, and Uzbekistan. Sometimes the term Oriental and Persian are used interchangeably to describe the same style of rug.  While Persian rugs are Oriental Rugs, not all Oriental rugs are considered Persian. Persia (present-day Iran) was considered the rug weaving center of the world for thousands of years. People generally assumed Persian rugs were the finest in the world. Until recently, most of the Oriental rugs sold in the United States were from Persia. While it’s true that Oriental rugs woven in Iran are generally of superior quality, there are those that range from mediocre to poor. Here are some tips to make sure the rug you purchase is made to last: 1.) Be sure to only purchase from a reputable dealer. Stay far away from “Going out of Business” sales. Also avoid traveling auctions. They are usually outlets for rejected goods. It is advisable to deal with direct importers of handmade rugs. 2.) Make sure the rug you choose fits your personal taste and style. Does it have a pattern and color that you like? Is it rich and luminous? Is the pile at an even height, and sheared properly? Is the right size for the area in your home where you want to place the rug? When it comes to one of a kind, hand-made rugs, remember they won’t be standard size. Authentic hand-knotted and woven Oriental area rugs are ‘perfectly imperfect’. Don’t worry about these irregularities. They’re proof that the rug was made by a human hand and not a machine. Many of the looms that tribal weavers use are wood. Wood reacts to heat, cold and dry or moist air. The loom can warp, hence, the reason for some of the irregularities. When you deal with art, irregularities just make the art more charming. In other words, if the rug is pleasing to you, these irregularities do not diminish the value of the rug. Here are some points to consider when deciding if the rug you’re looking at is of high quality: 1.) An authentic Oriental/Persian rug is made of natural materials, such as wool, cotton, silk, goat’s hair, and camel hair, with wool being the most popular material for the pile of the rug. Your Oriental rug that is made of a natural fiber, such as wool, will way outlast a synthetic broadloom and it’s much healthier in that there are no chemical emissions. 2.) Another thing to consider is the knot per square inch, or KPSI. Many people believe the higher the KPSI, the better the rug. This is true and not true. Why? Because it really depends on what part of the country the rug is made in, either in the city or country-side. City rugs are more formal in style and tend to have a higher knot count, as do silk rugs. Because there are more knots per square inch, the effect is finer, with more detailed images. Country rugs have a lower KPSI. They are bolder in design and more rustic, and have a more informal appeal. If the knot count is below 70, consider looking at another rug. Just remember, there are some extraordinarily fine Oriental rugs, which are traditionally executed with a lower knot count. 3.) The classical centers of Persian carpet production include: Tabriz, Kashan, Herat, and Kerman. The style traditionally comes in 3 general categories: geometric, floral, or pictorial/curvilinear. Just choose what appeals to you. Take into consideration where you are placing the rug. If it is to be used in a dining room with a table covering a good portion of it, then, choose a more all-over pattern with”border” interest. A center medallion will not be optimal in this case. 4.) Be sure to examine the backside of the rug you should be able to distinguish the individual knots and the pattern should be clear. The knots of a hand-made rug will not be regular or grid-like as with machine made rugs. Try folding the rug in half. If it creases, then it’s of poor quality. A quality hand knotted or woven rug can be folded and rolled. It will always lay flat when opened up. 5.) Make sure the rug is properly finished. Also, make sure it lays flat. 6.) Be sure the dealer is willing to guarantee that the rug is authentic. Oriental rugs are like paintings. They need to be showcased, or at least presented well. And it’s easier to start with the rug. If you already have furniture, then consider your furniture when choosing your rug.
