There are a number of different types of window shades available today. Solar shades and honeycomb shades have both become rather popular choices for window treatments, and for good reason. But there are also some drawbacks that come with both of these types of window shade. It is important to know as much as you can 
about a window treatment before making a decision.
Solar shades are a variation of roller shade that provides a unique option in shading and filtering light. Your everyday roller shade will pretty much completely block out light as well as your view when pulled down over a window. Solar shades, however, give you control over bright direct sunlight while still preserving your view through the window.
This advantage, however, can also be a disadvantage depending on where in the house your windows are located. Because solar shades are not completely opaque to allow light in during the day, they make it very easy to see into your home at night. This is not a problem for windows that face your backyard or an unpopulated area. But, for windows that face your neighborhood street, you may want consider a different type of treatment.
Honeycomb (or cellular) shades have become very popular recently as they are known for increasing home energy efficiency. This is because honeycomb shades are designed to prevent heat loss in the winter and heat gain in the summer. Not only is this good for environment, it’s good for your wallet as well. However, the shades need to be installed a certain way to reap the full benefits. If they are installed as close to the window as possible with both sides of the shade held close to the wall, it creates a sealed airspace that makes it very difficult for the hot or cold air to escape through the window.
There are a couple of disadvantages to honeycomb shades. The first disadvantage being that the accordion style of the shade may not mesh well with the rest of your home décor. The accordion style design is a major component in how the shade provides energy efficiency, so there is really no way around this. The other disadvantage is that honeycomb shades to not provide the same amount of light control as solar shades do.
When it comes down to it, the right shade for your windows really depends on your specific situation. Solar shades are best for windows that receive a lot of direct sunlight. But, to maintain privacy, they should not be installed on windows that face the street. Honeycomb shades are great for cutting energy costs, but do not provide the same amount of light control as solar shades.
