Carports are basically like garages but without a full set of walls and doors, and also usually without the hefty price tag. But there are many different choices you have when it comes to these types of structures and although they all serve the purpose of providing overhead protection for your vehicle, they are not all alike. Steel carports, for example, provide a durable and permanent structure that can basically take the place of any real garage and will last a long time. On the other hand, there are much more temporary models, made from PVC and canvas or vinyl that are good for temporary storage or protection, but won’t last in the long term in quite the same way.
If you are looking for carports that will really last a long time and can provide storage for large vehicles, that can be used in extreme weather conditions (or even just in areas that are prone to a decent amount of wind and snow), and that require little or no ongoing maintenance, then steel is probably the option you want to go with. That is because steel is one of the strongest and most durable of all material types and is not easily damaged. It may cost you a bit more up front to use steel compared to aluminum or PVC, but in the long term you will actually be saving money because the steel will last a lot longer than the other less expensive options.
Steel is comparably priced to wood, which is another option if you are looking for durability and a material that can be used for a long lasting structure. The only problem is that wood requires a lot of maintenance over time, which can get to be a pain. If you’re more interested in aesthetics, then wood may be the way to go, but if you want durability without the maintenance, stick with steel as your material of choice.
