Red wine goblets don’t need to have a stem. Traditionally wine goblets have had a stem for a number of reasons. One of these is so that the body-heat from your hand doesn’t affect the temperature of the wine it is holding. With red wine, you actually want it to be fairly warm, usually around room temperature, when you serve it. This means that you will hold a glass without a stem around the bulb of the glass warming the liquid up inside.

Red wine goblets tend to be larger than their white wine counterparts. This spreads the surface area of the glass to allow the wine to breath. It also means that the wine will warm to the air temperature quickly. With white wine you want it to stay chilled while drinking.

The classic large red wine glass is a Bordeaux glass, which you will find is the largest type of wine glass. These large glasses do look great and feel nice to sip a fine wine out of. Usually people these days buy wine glasses, but goblets made out of pewter, wood or other materials can still be found and certainly make interesting additions to any dinnerware set.

So when considering buying red wine goblets, do consider getting large glasses and maybe even ones without a stem as these can be very functional as well as interesting glasses to enjoy a drop of red out of. There is a large variety of different designs and materials that these goblets are made too and finding ones that you particularly like can be a rewarding experience.
