Using recessed lighting in the home has been around for a very long time, and many people keep recycling the same installation ideas for their home. Recessed lights are extraordinarily versatile, and can be used in a lot of different places that may surprise you. In this post I want to offer four creative ways that other people are installing these lights so you can get the gears
of your brain moving in a more creative direction!
First off, why do these lights have to be used only in the ceiling? There is not a rule book out there that determines the “proper” way to use a recessed light, and anywhere in the home is fair game! In the hallway, one of my favorite installations is to line the bottom of the walls with mini recessed lights. It gives the hall a very clean and elegant look that is not seen often enough.
Taking idea number one a bit further, these lights can also be installed in the floor. Having recessed lights flush with the floor is a great way to provide a unique lighting perspective. This doesn’t work well with carpet, but tile and hardwood floor pair well with this lighting setup. Take this look outdoors to light up a walkway or give trees new life in the darkness!
Idea number three utilizes any arches that you might have in your home. I’m not sure why, but any time I see an arch anywhere in a home that doesn’t have a recessed light in it, it just doesn’t look right. It’s extremely easy to install lights in these, and the impact is huge!
The fourth, and final idea for creative recessed light installations is working in pairs. Most installations for these lights have them in a long row with only a single fixture. What would happen if you paired the light fixture close together in a long line? It offers a unique take on a boring light fixture! Having two fixtures about a foot apart, and then spacing them normally around your space works very well!
There are a lot of different ways to use recessed lights in the home. I hope that the uses discussed above sparked some new ideas in your head, and helped you see some of the more creative ways to use a boring light fixture!
